The American Bryson DeChambeau decided to pull out of this week’s Professional Long Drivers Association event in Florida, and apparently for a big reason. Bobby Peterson, one of the association’s owners, told Sports Illustrated that DeChambeau will undergo surgery on his left hand to re-compose and repair a broken carpal bone. And now it is in serious doubt for the next Grand Slam, the PGA Championship, held from May 19 to 22 in Southern Hills (Tulsa, Oklahoma).
DeChambeau, 2020 US Open champion, said he aggravated his hand injury while playing table tennis in Saudi Arabia while there to compete in Saudi International in early February. It’s an injury that, as he explained himself last week in Augusta, in the run-up to the Masters, began to show signs in November 2021 and worsened in the first weeks of 2022.
DeChambeau, 28, has missed the cut in three of his last four PGA Tour appearances, including the Masters. And it dropped to 19th place in the world rankings.
