Dorna has shared the official statistics of the 2022 crash ranking in three categories where it can be seen that South African Darryn Binder has become the uncomfortable winner of the ‘bayette award’, which is how the pilot who kisses the ground is usually known. The rookie leads the MotoGP rankings and also the total with 27 after the most eventful campaign in the premier class since Dorna started publishing the statistics in 2006.
A report in which the terms “fall” and “accident” are used interchangeably, when the motorcycle physically touches the ground and remains on it. The 2022 campaign is long in three categories, the second most events in the last 12 years with 1,106, although it is true that there are a record 20 Grands Prix. The record campaign is still 2017 with 1,126 in 18 GGPP.
In 2022, 1,106 falls are shared by 335 in the star category and an average of 16.7 per GP, the second highest average after 2017 (17.4), a year in which there were many bad weather conditions. Such a high number of 335 falls in the star category has not yet been reached.
In Moto2 it accumulates the most crashes, there are also more riders, with 428 and an average of 21.4, but they are not yet at the record number they maintained with 434 and an average of 24.1 in the 2017 campaign. In Moto3 they are remaining 343 and an average of 17.5, which is also not among the campaigns with the most events (in 2019 the average was 21.3).
For the Grand Prix, the Portuguese GP leads the ranking with 105 followed by the GGPP of France (87) and San Marino (71) and which is below Argentina with 34 but also with one less GP day. At 37 is the GP of Catalonia. The red point of the championship, turn 1 of the Sachsenring accumulated 21 crashes.
The battle in MotoGP takes place between the beginners, usually the leaders every year for obvious reasons, and the Honda riders who find themselves in 2022 with a rugged motorcycle and prone to accidents on it. The youngest of the Binders led with 27 followed by another rookie, Bezzecchi (23), and Pol Espargaró and Alex Márquez with 21. Marc Márquez in only 12 contested -eight less- added 18 reasons why he is the leader in the average although sixth in the ranking. And Taka Nakagami with 12 is 14th, but with three fewer GGPP.
On the other side, Maverick Viñales stood out, having completed only two of 20 Grand Prix with Aprilia. In Moto2, the one with the most accidents is the Thai Keminth Kubo with 25 and the one with the least is the Dutch Bo Bendneyder, with one and in Moto3 the leader is the Italian Elia Bartolini with 22 and the one that fell to no less than Ana Carrasco, with three .
