The concerns maintained by the IOC in terms of “governance, financial transparency, sustainability and integrity of arbitration processes” with respect to the International Boxing Association (IBA) are already numerous, “if a decision is made today in inclusion of boxing in the Los Angeles 2028 Games under the authority of the IBA”, the Olympic body will not recommend it.
This is how the IOC expressed it in a letter sent to the IBA and made public this Tuesday by Kit McConnell, director of Sports of the organization, after the meeting held in Lausanne (Switzerland) of its Executive Commission.
“There are multiple signs that the drastic change in culture requested by the IOC to lift the IBA’s suspension of recognition has not materialized. Because of this, the IOC is not in a position to back down from its position.” in which the boxing federation will continue to be sanctioned, said the letter sent to its president, the Russian Umar Kremlev.
“It’s not a problem with boxing or boxers, it’s a problem with OTHERS,” McConnell insisted.
The IOC will remain vigilant and make a decision on the 2028 Games, whose initial program does not include boxing, “in due course”.
The body suspended IBA in 2019 for its irregularities, which have not stopped since then.
The last controversial episode carried out by the federation was the re-election in May of President Umar Kremlev after the suspension on the eve of the election of opposition candidate Boris van der Vorst, Dutch.
Van del Vorts appealed to the TAS, which agreed with him regarding the unfairness of his suspension, but the IBA assembly still decided that there was no reason to repeat the election.
In September, the IOC Executive released a new classification system for the Paris 2024 Games, which will not take place under the authority of the IBA.
This Monday, at the beginning of the Executive meeting, a small group of protesters displayed banners and t-shirts with the slogan “No to the Games without boxing” and phrases in support of IBA.
