A total of 227 people were arrested in Franceincluding 47 in Paris and its metropolitan area, during the confrontations after the final of World Cup won by Argentina against France on Sunday, the Interior Ministry announced on Monday.
A large force of 14,000 police and gendarmes was deployed across the country, including 2,750 in Paris, to contain the incidents, which took place after the quarterfinal against England and then the semifinal against Morocco.
On the Champs-Elysees, police, who attacked with bottles and fireworks, used tear gas, AFP journalists said. In Lyon, about fifteen people were arrested for launching projectiles and causing damage in Place Bellecour, according to the prefecture. Five people were arrested in Bordeaux after clashes with police in the Place de la Victoire.
In Nice, Mayor Christian Estrosi condemned “with the strongest firmness” the destruction of a neighborhood in the city. And in Béziers, a 14-year-old boy was arrested after firing mortars at a CRS vehicle.
