The outgoing president of Juventus, Andrea Agnelli, defended the club, in trouble in the sporting field and also in the crosshairs of justice, and his “not easy” decision to leave office during the meeting of shareholders held today.
“It is clear that the decision to leave the position of president of Juventus was not an easy decision for me (…) that I have committed myself all these years to the best of my ability to achieve the results that we got in. and out of the field”, declared Agnelli during the gathering.
Juventus shareholders certified the accounts for the 2021-2022 financial year, which ended with a loss of 239.3 million euros, which is the fifth consecutive year of deficit for the Turin club.
“Juventus is now called to defend its own position,” continued Agnelli, despite the fact that “both personally and all the members of the Board of Directors are firmly convinced that the club has done well in the past years and the criticisms made against us are unjustified.”
suspected wrongdoing
Juve is suspected of manipulating the market by disseminating biased financial information and also issuing invoices for non-existent transactions during the period 2018-2021.
On December 1, Agnelli, who has been in charge of the club since 2010, became the subject of a referral request to justice, along with eleven other former directors, for alleged financial violations of the club, which listed on the stock market.
en bloc resignation
Three days earlier, on November 28, he resigned, like the entire Board of Directors, under pressure from an investigation into alleged accounting irregularities.
Agnelli again justified the actions of Juve’s outgoing managers, assuring that “the in-depth analysis carried out in recent weeks by independent experts has confirmed that our board of directors has functioned correctly.”
But since the club had to defend itself and prove “good and legitimate reasons” for its behavior, Agnelli deemed it “appropriate to step back” to make it easier for the team and the new board of directors to due to be officially appointed in mid-January.
“Juventus is the first and most important thing, until the end,” concluded Agnelli.
