Dakar 2023: This is Carlos Sainz’s turnaround

Carlos Sainz suffered a rollover at the start of stage 9 of the Dakar 2023, in the first special of the second week after yesterday’s rest day. The Spanish pilot suffered a rollover when jumping over a dune and found himself higher than he expected before. The landing was not as desired, as the car went forward, facing too much towards the sand due to its inertia. The frontal impact caused Carlos Sainz to become a pure passenger in his car, which due to inertia ended up upside down, face down. Hours after his accident, Dakar shared a video showing the entire incident, from a rear camera. Carlos suffered chest pains on the right side, as the organization assured the bivouac of Haradh, and first boarded the helicopter to leave. But finally, he changed his mind and requested that the helicopter return him to the position of his car so that he could wait at the truck and continue if they were able to fix the car. Carlos’ goal is to reach the Haradh bivouac to rejoin the race with the last wild card available to him (priority drivers have 3 ‘jokers’) to continue the race, with another major penalty to add to his overall classification. After fixing the problem, Carlos left the special to go to the bivouac by road, where he will receive another major penalty in the general to rejoin the race for the third time this Wednesday on stage 10.
