A new earthquake has rocked the Greek island of Lesbos: residents are worried because the earth has been shaking again and again since the weekend. First there were two earthquakes of magnitude 4.9 and 4.7. Dozens of smaller quakes followed, and now the 4.8 quake on the Richter scale.
Seismologists said on Tuesday they cannot currently rule out a larger quake. The earthquakes are very strongly felt because their centers are between ten and 17 kilometers underground, so close to the earth’s surface. They took place near the popular tourist resort of Molyvos in the north of the island of Lesbos and were accompanied by a loud roar, reporters on the scene said.
There were no reports of casualties or serious damage. However, some landslides occurred and houses were damaged. According to local media, the tremors were felt on almost all islands in the eastern Aegean Sea and across the Turkish coast.
