English golfer Tommy Fleetwood won the final victory in the Dubai Invitational, a tournament that matches the DP World Tour circuit, with a total of 265 strokes, nineteen under par for the course, thanks to the birdies he signed in the last two holes and a mistake by McIlroy.
Fleetwood, who entered the final day as the leader, had an exciting duel to the finish with the Northern Irishman and the South African Thriston Lawrence. The latter, the first to finish the route of three, did it at -18 and thus forced a good outcome from his rivals if they wanted to surpass him.
A bogey on the 16th at Fleetwood complicated things for him. McIlroy took advantage of that setback on the 17th, to overtake Lawrence with a birdie and become the sole leader with one hole remaining.
However, the number two in world golf sent the ball into the water on his tee shot. His mistake and the subsequent penalty, which led to a bogey, together with two final birdies by his main competitor, Fleetwood, left him without the trophy.
In this way, the Englishman won his seventh tournament on the DP World Tour, the first since 2018 that was not the Nedbank Golf Challenge, an event he won in 2019 and 2022. The best Spaniard in the end was Adrian Otaegui, who tied with Pablo Larrazábal, both in 20th place with 277 (-7).
