Jannik Sinner, Hubert Hurkacz and Denis Shapovalov came through as solid favourites in their Australian Open debuts against British Kyle Edmund, Spanish Pedro Martínez and Serbian Dusan Lajovic, respectively.
Sinner, one of the leaders of the new generation, embroidered dizzying tennis after closing his debut with a total of 24 winners and just 25 unforced errors which is surprising compared to his rival’s 38.
The final result was 6-4, 6-0 and 6-2 in less than two hours and his next opponent was Argentine Tomás Martín Etcheverrywhich he has not faced in the past, after defeating Frenchman Gregoire Barrere 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
For his part, Pole Hurkacz avoided a scare in the first set against a combative Martínez who surrendered the tiebreaker game to channel the classification in the second round that would certify 7-6 (1), 6-2 and 6-2.
Hurkacz displayed impressive tennis resulting in 24 aces and 53 winners.
The Valencian could not match the result he achieved in the last edition where he fell in the second round in a deadly five-set match against the Chilean Cristian Garín.
The Pole’s opponent in the next round will be known after the conclusion of the clash between the Italian Lorenzo Sonego and the Portuguese Nuno Borges.
The Canadian also played his role as a seed Denis Shapovalov beat Serbian Dusan Lajovic 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and 6-1 in a match that lasted up to two hours and twenty minutes.
Like Hurkacz, Shapovalov also called for the fast lane and punished his opponent with a total of 16 aces and 52 winners.
His opponent in the next round will be known after the end of the fight between the Mexican Ernesto Escobedo and the Japanese Taro Daniel.
For his part, American Sebastian Korda (29) continued the good feelings experienced in Adelaidewhere he fell in the final against Serbian Novak Djokovic (4), beating Chilean Cristian Garín 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 and 6-2.
In the next stage, he will face the Japanese from the previous one, Yosuke Watanuki.
