Swedish Armand Duplantisworld record holder and Olympic pole vault champion, declared last Thursday that the “main goal, and almost the only one” of the winter season, is to break the world record which he currently owns with a mark of 6.21 meters.
Duplantis started the season in Uppsala (Sweden) on February 2 with a best jump of 6.10 meters and had a failed attempt to reach 6.22 to break his own record.
“The main goal, and almost the only one, is to improve the world record,” said Duplantis in a press conference, a day before competing in the Istaf Meeting in Berlin (Germany), which corresponds to the World Athletics indoor silver circuit. .
Duplantis, continental indoor champion in 2022, in Belgrade, did not confirm his presence for less than a month at the European indoor track in Istanbul (Turkey) to defend his title.
“We will see, but what I’m really trying to do this indoor season is break the world record. I don’t have as many indoor competitions as I used to and I have great memories of Berlin. The reason I’m here is to give myself another chance to break my world record,” said the Swedish athlete, who won in Berlin last year with a mark of 6.03 meters.
“The plan was to have a shorter track season this year, which I did by continuing to compete later. My next two competitions are in France, in Lievin (February 15) and in Clermont-Ferrand (February 25)”, he concluded.
