From mid-May it will no longer be allowed to smoke a joint on the street in the old city center of Amsterdam. The neighborhood must become safer and more liveable for the residents, according to the city council. The atmosphere can be “very grim” at the moment, especially at night.
In fact, residents have been complaining for years about the consequences of mass tourism, such as people drinking, roaring and smoking weed on the streets. Tourists would even attract street dealers. This led to crime and an unsafe atmosphere, according to officials in the Dutch capital.
Coffee shops can be hit from 4pm
The atmosphere can be very grim, especially at night. From mid-May, the established weed ban applies in the old city centre. It is still unclear whether coffee shops, which are also popular with tourists, will be affected by the ban. Authorities are currently investigating whether the sale of small amounts of hashish and marijuana in coffee shops should be restricted between 4 p.m. and 1 a.m.
The cannabis ban is part of a package to combat the problems of mass tourism. For example, inns in the famous red-light district “Wallen” are not allowed to admit new customers after 1 a.m. Prostitutes must close their windows by 3 am at the latest. Previously, they were allowed to work until 6 a.m.
The neighborhood must become safer and more livable for the residents. Just over 900,000 people live in Amsterdam.
