2-3: Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen complete their black week

Date:

After Thursday’s defeat against Monaco in the Europa League, Bayer Leverkusen completed a black week with another defeat, the second in a row, at the BayArena after another 2-3 defeat by Mainz that kept the team away from Xabi is Alonso from the European zone.

Three defeats in the last four games in the Bundesliga keep Bayer Leverkusen away from the top of the table and spoil the recovery that was proved by the arrival of the coach from Tolosa on the bench.

Leverkusen started by missing a penalty

Everything went wrong for Leverkusen in a match they tried to put right and it ended with a penalty leaving them with a loss and one less player. He pointed to a bad afternoon when he wasted a penalty taken by Anton Stach which was saved by Burkinabe Edmond Tapsoba and saved by Mainz goalkeeper Finn Dahmen.

Leverkusen were frustrated by the missed opportunity and found themselves behind three minutes later when Anthony Caci put the visitors ahead.

Xabi’s team reacted and leveled after half-time with Nadiem Amiri’s goal from Iran’s Sardar Azmoun, but in first-half added time Luxembourger Leandro Barreiro gave Mainz the lead again.

Decisive punishment and expulsion

Xabi Alonso turned to Czech Patrik Schick, who replaced Amiri on 56′ and two minutes later beat Finn Dahmen to give Bayer Leverkusen the equaliser. But when the locals were looking for the winning goal, an important action came. A foul committed inside the area by Amine Adli led to his dismissal and the penalty converted by Dane Marcus Ingvartsen to give Mainz the three points.

The defeat brought Bayer Leverkusen to tenth position, eleven points behind Europe and behind Mainz, who took ninth place from them and two ahead of them.
