Jon Rahmwho won this Sunday’s Genesis Invitational and thus got number one in the world ranking, He is eager to return to the top of the standings thanks to a sensational start to 2023.
“To reach number one again is an honor. About time… And winning in this field is incredible. Something that no great Spaniard could do,” he said in the press conference after his victory.
“It’s an honor and I honestly don’t know how to explain what a great week it’s been, it’s beautiful now, it’s fun. Even though it’s stressful, it’s very emotional. And to be declared champion of his tournament by Tiger Woods is an honor.”
Rahm reached the final round of this tournament, led by Woods, with a three-stroke lead over American Max Homa and He finished his participation with a total of -17 (-2 on Sunday) while his pursuer remained at -15 accumulated (-3 in the fourth round).
“It was a stressful day and a good day where I played very good golf. The first nine holes I played well (…). It’s a pity that from 10 to 12 he couldn’t play them under par. If I had done it under par like I did the rest of the day, the last few holes would have been easier,” he explained.
“But I’m very proud of how I was able to turn around a bad situation and finish the last six holes at 2 under par.. In his third tournament win in a stunning start to 2023, Rahm, who finished third this week, overtook American Scottie Scheffler (first) and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy (second) to top the world rankings for the first time since March 2022.
His victory at the Genesis Invitational joining his already accomplished Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express this year to establish himself as the strongest golfer on the planet by 2023.
It was the 10th PGA Tour win for Rahm in his entire career and his fifth win in his last nine tournaments (counting the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023).
He is also the only golfer with three wins this year.
With his 10 wins, Rahm surpassed the legendary Severiano Ballesteros’ mark (9) and there is only one Spaniard with more wins than him on the PGA Tour: Sergio García, who has 11 to his credit.
In addition to world number one, Rahm extended his lead to 426 points in front of the classification of the American circuit (FedExCup).
