A German alpinist endured frightening hours in the Tyrolean Achenkirch (Schwaz district) on Sunday! The 28-year-old fell into rough terrain while hiking and lost consciousness. After she only regained consciousness in the evening (!) and descent was no longer possible due to her injuries, the woman made an emergency call. Immediately afterwards the battery of the mobile phone was empty. She was nowhere to be found. The result was an hour-long search!
In the afternoon, the 28-year-old German walked alone to the Silberberghütte in Achenkirch. Descending into the valley, the woman wanted to take a shortcut and ended up in a pathless, densely wooded area. Then the accident took its course.
Lost consciousness after a fall
The walker fell and possibly lost consciousness. She finally regained consciousness around 7pm – and she had to realize that she had injured her leg and it was impossible to continue on her own. But that’s not all: your smartphone’s battery level was already extremely low!
The injured person could not be located
The 28-year-old just managed to make an emergency call. Immediately after that, her cell phone went off. “The exact position of the woman could therefore not be determined,” the researchers say. The police helicopter and a drone – both equipped with thermal imaging cameras – were called in for the search operation.
Just before midnight, the all-clear sound was given
“However, due to the dense forest, the thermal imaging cameras could not find the woman, which is why the mountain rescue service also asked for a police dog,” the researchers continue. The injured woman was not found in the rough terrain until shortly before 11:30 p.m. and was transported to the valley after first aid.
