The Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo was one of the many figures who celebrated the success achieved today by the Portuguese women’s team and congratulated the team for its “historic qualification” for the first World Cup in its history.
“Congratulations on this historic classification, here we go!” Cristiano, a Saudi Al Nassr player and captain of the Portuguese men’s team, wrote on his Twitter profile.
Bruno Fernandes, another of the “quinas” stars and Manchester United player, also took to Twitter to celebrate Portugal’s unprecedented qualification.
“Proud of you again,” he said.
First-rate political figures also joined the celebration.
“Historic! Portugal beat Cameroon and guaranteed an unprecedented qualification for the Women’s Soccer World Cup. Congratulations on the great conquest!”, wrote the Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, on his Twitter profile.
For his part, the country’s president, the conservative Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, announced that he would receive the Portuguese team at the Belém Palace, seat of the Presidency.
Portugal qualified on Wednesday for the 2023 World Cup, to be held in Australia and New Zealand, by beating Cameroon 2-1.
The Portuguese team will face a big challenge, as they will be drawn in group E with Vietnam and the powerful combination of the United States and the Netherlands, defending champions and runners-up, respectively.
