China’s top diplomat: – “Won’t succumb to third party pressure”

Date:

Shortly before the first anniversary of the war in Ukraine, Russia and China continue to deepen their partnership. During a visit by China’s top diplomat Wang Yi to Moscow on Wednesday, President Vladimir Putin announced that President Xi Jinping would visit Russia. That was agreed, Putin said. “Everything is moving forward, evolving. We are reaching new frontiers.”

“International relations today are complicated,” Putin said, according to Russia’s state agency TASS. “In this context, the cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation (…) is particularly important for stabilizing the international situation.” Wang stressed that relations between the two countries are strained by an unstable international situation. and that crises offer certain opportunities. The Sino-Russian relationship is not directed against third parties, but will also “not succumb to pressure from third parties”.

In an earlier conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Wang said he looks forward to reaching new agreements with Russia during his visit. He left open what these could be. His goal is to strengthen and deepen ties between Russia and China, Wang said.

The US is concerned about China’s rapprochement with Russia
Wang’s statement has been interpreted as a rhetorical swipe at the US, which is increasingly concerned that the People’s Republic of China could back Russia with arms in its war against Ukraine. Shortly before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine nearly a year ago, Putin and President Xi reached an all-encompassing partnership. The rapprochement between the two superpowers is viewed with concern in the West, as is a recently announced peace plan for Ukraine by China.

Ukraine demands withdrawal of troops from Moscow before talks
On the anniversary (February 24), Xi wants to present the position paper, which has only been known in outline so far. These include “respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity,” according to the foreign ministry in Beijing. Ukraine is demanding the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from its territory, including Crimea, as a condition of talks with Moscow.
