Medvedev, Doha champion who stopped Murray

Date:

The British veteran has no award andy murraylost in the final of the ATP 250 tournament on the hard court in Doha by the Russian Daniel Medvedev who achieved the seventeenth title of his career, the second in 2023, by winning the final by doubles 6-4.

This is the second consecutive trophy for the player from Moscow, eighth in the world and winner before the ‘indoor’ in Rotterdam. Add nine consecutive victories. It prevented Murray from rounding off his spectacular performance in Doha and winning another award. He hasn’t done it since he won at Antwerp 2019.

Murray cannot face an opponent who has not won. The Scotsman, a former world number one, has lost all three times he has met the Muscovite who also won in Doha.

The 35-year-old Briton, who fought in the semifinal against Jiri Lehecka on Friday after saving five match points, he was starved of options in the final. This is the third time that Andy Murray has claimed the trophy in Doha. In 2007 he lost to Croatian Ivan Ljubicic and in 2017 to Novak Djokovic.

Murray came away empty-handed this time. As was the case with last year’s finals, the last ones he played, in Stuttgart and in Sydney. The victory defies the British to cling to the competition, where he maintains a high level and where he has won 47 titles throughout his career.
