Union Berlin has lost steam and is 5 points behind the lead

Date:

Union Berlin drew 0-0 at home to Cologne on Saturday, while Freiburg’s away game against Borussia Mönchengladbach ended in the same score.

After both draws, the distance between Union (3rd) and Borussia Dortmund, provisional leaders of the Bundesliga, is now 5 points. Freiburg’s (5th) is 7, the same as Leipzig’s (4th). With this, everything points to a one-on-one at the top of the standings between Dortmund and Bayern, who visit Stuttgart this afternoon.

Union Berlin lost steam and went from being one point away from the lead to being relegated to five after three games without a win (two 0-0s and a defeat) and without scoring.

The final four, tied on points!

While at the top the results make the situation clear at the other end the fight for relegation has become tighter.

Schalke came out of the basement of the table by beating Bochum -now wearing the red lantern- 0-2 with an own goal from goalkeeper Manuel Riemann and another from Marius Bülter.

Hoffenheim continue in free fall

Meanwhile, Hoffenheim lost at Mainz 1-0, taking the last three – even the last four if you include Stuttgart, who still have a game to play against Bayern – on 19 points.

Hoffenheim have lost ten in eleven games and thirteen without a win in a row which has dropped them from fourth position into the relegation zone.

All this indicates a tight fight for permanence in which two will ultimately end up in direct relegation and a third will have to play a double match against the third from the second Bundesliga.

Hertha, who have 20 points and play tomorrow against Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, could also be involved in that match.
