Medvedev remembered Alcaraz after becoming champion in Miami

Date:

Daniel Medvedev suffered a heavy loss two weeks ago against Carlos Alcaraz (6-3, 6-2) in the final of Indian Wells Masters 1000. His trainer, Gilles Cervarasaid that day that Alcaraz was the one “Mike Tyson of Tennis” with the force of his punch.

The Murcian tennis player had a chance to repeat the final with the Russian Miamibut lost on Saturday in the semifinals after an amazing and difficult game against Jannik Sinnerwho won 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2 in three hours of play.

Before Sinner eliminated Alcaraz, Medvedev commented that the Spanish tennis player’s extraordinary streak of games and results would eventually come to an end.

“Yes, Carlos is ‘on fire’, but you can’t win 100 games in a row. Maybe you can win 40 or 45, or whatever he did. Djokovic. Someone throw water on that fire (from Alcaraz). Maybe Sinner, maybe it’s Sunday or the next tournament. But I have to believe in myself and try to give my best,” Medvedev said after the loss Karen Khachanova in the Miami semifinals. Djokovic, in particular, won 43 consecutive matches between 2010 and 2011.

Once crowned as the new champion in Miami, the Russian player remembered Carlos again at the trophy ceremony, knowing that Alcaraz himself had finally dealt him an unintended hand by wearing down the Sinner so much, that it paid off physically he did it in the final.

“Everyone enjoyed that incredible semifinal between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. It’s not easy to recover from that match and I, on the other hand, watched it calmly on television. In the final we had hottest and most humid day, the conditions are tough,” admitted Medvedev.

Sinner himself admitted that he did not play in the final in his best condition. “I woke up a bit sick and not at my best level. Congratulations Daniil for your five straight finals and four titles, you play incredible tennis,” said the Italian. However, the Russian made the move as he won all six of his ATP matches.

Medvedev cited the “confidence” he has in his game now as a key factor in understanding the streak of four near-consecutive titles. (Rotterdam, Doha, Dubai, Miami) and 24 wins in their last 25 matches, including the lone mole from the last Indian Wells on loan to Alcaraz.
