The economist Jakov Milatovic, who is backed by the pro-Serb camp, has won the presidential election in Montenegro, according to initial forecasts. The Balkan country will probably lose its permanent ruler with this.
According to the electoral research institute Cemi, which assumed a count of 62.7 percent of the votes cast, he won 60.1 percent of the vote in Sunday’s second round. The pro-Western incumbent Milo Djukanovic received 39.9 percent of the vote. With the defeat in the presidential election, Djukanovic, who had determined the country’s politics for more than three decades, loses his last position of power. More than two years ago, the presidential party DPS was defeated in parliamentary elections by a coalition of pro-Serb and reform parties.
Serbia and “Europe Now!”
Milatovic is close to the Serbian Orthodox Church, which is administered from Belgrade. He was economy minister in the short-lived pro-Serbian government that served from December 2020 to April 2021. After the end of this cabinet, he co-founded the new party “Europe Now!” on. This is committed to the country’s intended accession to the EU, but at the same time represents the close ties with Serbia.
Djukanovic led the former Yugoslav republic to independence in 2006 and NATO in 2017. At the same time, his rule was repeatedly overshadowed by corruption and cronyism.
