The Italian Matteo Berrettini will not be in Rome Masters 1,000 due to a stomach injury that prevented him, for the second year in a row, from participating in the tournament in his city.
The 27-year-old Roman tennis player confirmed on Friday that he will have to miss at least a week before returning to training, making his presence at the Foro Italico impossible.
“I held on to the hope that I would be able to play in Rome, a tournament that is very important to me and where, perhaps, all my dreams began. However, unfortunately, the results of the last MRI showed that I need at least a week before starting training again,” he said on his Instagram account.
“Not participating in the tournament in Rome is very difficult to accept. Your support means a lot… I can’t wait to come back and play in front of you,” he concluded.
Berrettini, who has regained momentum to face the final stage of the clay court season, was injured during the last Monte Carlo tournament in the internal oblique muscle of the stomach which, in addition to forcing him not to play in the Madrid tournament and in Rome, questions in his presence Roland Garros.
