Jurgen Klopp accused the referee Paul Tierney to have something “against” Liverpool after their thrilling 4-3 Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Liverpool led 3-0 after 15 minutes but leveled at 3-3 when Richarlison beat Alisson in stoppage time, and Klopp protested a free-kick awarded to Tottenham before the equaliser.
Diogo Jota then scored Liverpool’s winner a minute later and Klopp confronted the fourth official before running down the touchline to celebrate, where Tierney showed him a yellow card.
Klopp has criticized Tierney in the past, saying he should have shown Spurs forward Harry Kane a red card for a dangerous tackle in a match between the two teams in 2021. Another “story” with the referee.
“I don’t really know what he is against us,” Klopp told Sky Sports. “He said there was no problem, but that couldn’t be true. I don’t understand how he looked at me. The card was wrong.” Klopp did not provide further details about the incident.
The body of referees defends itself
The PGMOL refereeing staff said it was aware of Klopp’s comments: “Premier League match officials check in on all matches via a communication system. Having a full review of audio of referee Paul Tierney’s match, We can confirm that he acted in a professional manner throughout, including when issuing a booking to the Liverpool manager, and we therefore strongly reject any suggestion that those were inappropriate Tierney’s action.”
