Mercedes will showcase a major upgrade to its car at the upcoming Emilia Romagna GP at Imola. Many expectations have been placed on the many new things that the star company will bring to the mythical Italian circuit after the strong announcement launched by the team boss, Toto Wolff, in March. However, something seems to have changed for the Austrian, who a month and a half later gave less optimistic remarks regarding these improvements. Wolff himself announced that Mercedes will bring “new front suspension, new chassis, new floors and other things” to Imola.
“It’s not going to change much either. Never, in the 15 years I’ve been in F1, has a change been introduced that’s so big that it gives you half a second, so I doubt it’s going to happen.” Wolff said in Miami.
At the end of March, Toto Wolff praised the enormous work being carried out by the Brackley factory, emphasizing the positive data coming out of the wind tunnel and the assembly simulations related to these new parts, and not only that: He ensured that not a single part of the current car was left unrevised and that changes could flow to any part of the car and he was surprising in not rejecting the idea that his car could abandon its failed concept without sidepods. and looks more like the Red Bull RB19, the championship’s dominant car.
Wolff said at the end of March
“There is no dogma about what a car should be. It just has to be the fastest race car possible. If that car looks like a Red Bull… I don’t care. I won’t be ashamed if it’s fast. .” I commented before.
“We’re going full steam ahead and turning things around. We’re making huge strides today in our R&D department and in our understanding of the wind tunnel, which those are really big steps because we just need to have confirmation in Bahrain that we are wrong. The kind of gains that are happening in our R&D and in aerodynamics are bigger than we’ve had in a long time.”, warned Wolff.
“I think if we continue to make the big strides that we’ve made in the last 10 days, I think we’ll get to a stage where we can really respond. We just have to put the car in a different window, we change the body of the car and how the ground works. The team at Brackley is in full swing. We see many beautiful things. We see fruits within reach with things that are encouraging”added at that time.
New speech about the news
The aforementioned speech has nothing to do with the one he gave after the Miami F1 GP, much less the one he gave after the Miami F1 GP.
“We have to manage our own expectations. At Imola we will bring an upgrade package consisting of new front suspension, new chassis, new floors and more. We’re looking for downforce and trying to do the best possible job mechanically.”he commented.
“It’s not going to change much either. Never, in the 15 years I’ve been in F1, has a change been introduced that’s so big that it gives you half a second, so I doubt it’s going to happen.”, argument. In a month and a half, he went from talking about a big revolution, to a package of new things that won’t change grid photography much.
“Our desire is to take some variables off the table, where we believe we have introduced something we don’t understand to the car. We can have a more stable platform and from there we should see where the base is and what we can do from that point.” added Wolff, who already said in Miami that his current W14 is “rubbish” due to the impossibility of understanding the reason why they failed to reach their potential. With these evolutions, Mercedes aims to understand its car better in order to take steps forward on the track, but from what Wolff says, it’s not an improvement that will radically change the car.
“The evolution we’re going to bring will help set us in the right direction and understand the areas where we can understand why the car is so difficult to drive.”qualified.
“The current car is garbage”
Last Saturday, after the poor classification of Mercedes at the Miami GP, Toto Wolff, boss of the star team, did not hesitate to refer to his current car as “rubbish”. “It’s worse than I thought,” he said.
“It’s not a good car. Its weaknesses are everywhere: at speed, the performance of the car… it’s the lack of understanding of the car why it’s not performing. That’s all,” said said Wolff. Now With these improvements they want to end the “lack of understanding” about why their car fails to perform more potential, but there is no more talk about the revolution.
