One of the symbols that defines par excellence is Italy is spinning it’s pink. The Italian race, the first great three-week cycling tour currently taking place on the calendar, is one of the most passionate on the entire calendar, due to the love shown by the ‘tifosi’ as the race progresses and due to the design of the routes , always ‘crazy’, difficult and uncertain. And within this passion, the pink jersey worn by the race leader, which the Belgian wore for three days this year, stands out. Remco Evenepoel and two are Norwegian Andreas Leknessund.
The first Italy is spinning started on May 13, 1909 in the city of Milan and finished in the fashion capital of the world after a total of 8 stages and 2,448 kilometers, with the Italian triplet at the end on the legs of Luigi Ganna, Carlo Galetti and Giovanni Rossignoli, first, second and third respectively. In its beginnings, the winner of the Giro did not wear pink and was not taken through the streets of Italy. In fact, it took 22 years before it was decided to adopt a decision that has gone down in history and over the years has become a monument of racing, to the point that the test is also known as ‘Corsa Rosa’. In the year 1931, Armando Counetdirector of the Giro at the time, decided to give the leader of the race a symbol so that people know who will be first, a pink jersey, which decided to use the characteristic color of the Italian newspaper ‘La Gazzeta dello Sport ‘.
The first cyclist to have the honor of wearing the signature pink jersey was the Italian Learco Guerra, winner of the first stage of the Giro 1931 in between Milan and Mantua, in an edition that his countryman will win Francesco Camusso. To celebrate 90 years of ‘pink’ passion, an interactive virtual exhibition is organized in collaboration with Ghisallo Museum -Cycling Museum– and the Alessandria città delle Biciclette (ACdB Museum).
Throughout history, there have been 17 Spanish cyclists who have worn the ‘pink jersey’, and Alfredo Binda (1925, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1953), Fausto Coppi (1940, 1947, 1949, 1952, 1953) and Eddy Merckx (1968, 1970, 1972, 1972) the runners who have covered it the most times: five.
