Portuguese boxman Luís Castro got the party started in the 12th minute, when Soares grabbed the rebound after a header from Argentine Víctor Cuesta hit the crossbar. The visitors, led by Vanderlei Luxemburgo, conceded the second in the 65th minute, as did Soares’ work from a penalty.
That goal allowed the Brazilian striker to become the league’s top scorer on his own with five goals, compared to four for Raphael Veiga, from Palmeiras. Eduardo put the finishing touches on the 81st minute by completing a counter-attacking video game between Tchê Tchê and Paraguayan Matías Segovia.
With this victory, Botafogo accumulates 15 games without losing between different competitions, while the Corinthians get four in a row without winning. The Rio de Janeiro squad has 15 points from a possible 15 in the Brazilian Championship, with two ahead of Palmeiras, who beat Gremio 4-1, and five over Fluminense, who beat Cruzeiro 2-0 at home, with Argentine Germán Cano scoring one of the goals.
Athletico Paranaense is in fourth position, with nine points after winning today by 0-2 against Internacional. Below, Cuiabá, Goiás, Coritiba and América Mineiro, bottom team, occupy the four relegation places in the second division.
