Ten dead in a massacre at a rally in Mexico

An armed attack against a group of amateur rally drivers left 10 dead early Sunday morning and nine were injured in Ensenada (northern Mexico), according to local authorities.

Drivers participating in an off-road race are parked on the shoulder of a freeway some men got out of a van and fired in his directionthe municipality of Ensenada reported in a statement.

The attack “left nine wounded and ten dead”according to the statement.

Videos posted on social networks showed the bodies of the victims scattered on the dusty road including SUVs.

The Baja California state prosecutor’s office, which covers the city of Ensenada, has been particularly affected by violence related to drug trafficking, announced the formation of a “special investigative group” to identify the killers and determine the motive for the attack.

Some of the injured were immediately treated by Red Cross paramedics before being transferred to city hospitals.

The state of Baja California registers the highest number of intentional homicides in Mexicomost of them are related to criminal organizations.

Between January and April, 721 murders were recorded there, according to official data.

Mexico, plunged into a spiral of violence, has recorded more than 400,000 deaths and tens of thousands of missing since the launch in 2006 of a US-backed military anti-drug offensive.
