A new parliament will be elected in Greece on Sunday. With 36 parties on the ballot paper, it is expected that none of them will win a majority. The conservative governing party Nea Dimokratia (ND) of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is a favourite.
Polls suggest the left-wing opposition party Syriza, with former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras as its top candidate, is likely to be the second strongest force. In the most recent polls, Mitsotakis’ party took about 35 percent, Syriza was more than seven percentage points behind.
In Greece, 9.8 million people (out of approximately 10.3 million inhabitants) are eligible to vote. You can even choose from 36 parties. The polling stations are open from 07:00 to 19:00 (local time) and the first weather forecasts are expected immediately afterwards. Meaningful projections can then be expected around 8pm (7pm CEST).
Ten days to form a government
Since no party can get more than 50 percent of the vote, a coalition is necessary. If the parties fail to agree on a government within ten days, a new government must be elected in July.
