Cavendish made the announcement at a press conference organized by his team Astana-Kazagstan on the rest day of the Giro d’Italia in Coccaglio, a day after his 38th birthday.

“I’ve loved riding every kilometer of this race so far, so I think it’s the perfect time to say that this is my last Giro d’Italia and that 2023 will be my last season as a professional cyclist,” said Cavendish, who stepped out with his wife Peta and their four children, one of whom, Casper, had a birthday on Monday.

And he was moved when talking about his career: “Cycling has been my life for more than 25 years. I have lived an absolute dream.
