Chicago Fire and Real Salt Lake reached the quarterfinals

He Chicago Fire and the Royal Salt Lake qualified this Wednesday for the quarterfinals of US Open Cup after the round of 16 matchday where four teams from MLS: Austin, Charlotte, Columbus Crew and Colorado Rapids. Conversely, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and the Birmingham Legion upset two top-tier teams.

On Tuesday, the other four teams that made it past the round of 16 were announced: the LA Galaxy, the Houston Dynamo, Inter Miami and Cincinnati. Of all these, the quarterfinal matches are as follows: Real Salt Lake-LA Galaxy, Chicago Fire-Houston Dynamo, Birmingham Legion-Inter Miami and Cincinnati-Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

The Pittsburgh team, which belongs to the USL, stunned the Columbus Crew 1-0 on Wednesday thanks to a goal from Albert Dikwa who took advantage of a turnover in the visitors’ midfield. For their part, the Birmingham Legion, also from the USL, also beat another MLS team, Charlotte, with a goal from Kasim Prosper after a great run down the right flank.

The Chicago Fire, with goals from Rafael Czichos and Kacper Przybylko, earned a creditable 2-0 away win over Austin in one of Wednesday’s two duels between the two MLS teams. The other was also taken by Real Salt Lake, who beat Colorado Rapids 0-1 with a spectacular shot from outside the area and after a counterattack from Venezuelan Jefferson Savarino.
