Sevilla won the seventh Europa League

Date:

Sevilla did it again. In all the literature of the world, with the penalty modified by Montiel, the man who gave Argentina the World Cup in Qatar, with everything he went through in a very difficult season… he added his seventh Europa League title after coming back from the final against Roma.

The king of the competition grew his legend in the best possible way, using the Bond as a protagonist who stops two penalties to re-enter glory.

Sevilla is set to repeat its history. The absolute dominator of the competition has already written golden pages that have given him credit in Europe. As in Eindhoven in 2006, Glasgow in 2007, Turin in 2014, Warsaw in 2015, Basel in 2016 and in Cologne in 2020, Sevillismo came out with almost 13,000 fans in the stands of Puskas Arena waiting for them to follow the custom of winning the finals they can reach and lift the Seventh.

A doubly rocky rival lies ahead. First for being Italian and second for José Mourinho’s leadership, but the experience of eliminating Manchester United and Juventus to reach the final is an endorsement for Mendilibar’s men, the miracle man in a dressing room he transformed into his arrival

And the Basque brought out his best possible eleven. With Acuña’s only loss due to suspension, Alex Telles took the Argentine’s place on the left side, where Mourinho will surprise. After announcing that Dybala was only there for 20 minutes, he took the Argentine and made him compete in the weak zone of the Andalusian team. The rest, its rocky block is combined with three central defenders, two wingers and a strong midfield that revolves around the Cristante-Matic axis. And from the first moment Roma looked strong to lead the final. Against a Sevilla that had no ideas that only wanted to hang balls on En-Nesyri, the superiority of the centimeter belonged to the Italians, who won the second plays. Twelve minutes later Bono had to intervene on a Spinazzola shot just after a brilliant play by Dybala. Moroccan saves kept them alive in a clash where Sevilla couldn’t seem to sink their teeth into Roma, who defended comfortably and bided their time.

And it came after 35 minutes of Rakitic’s tackle on Cristante where Sevilla players called for a foul. Mancini saw the space left by Badé and Dybala did not fail to take advantage to beat Bono.

Sevilla, as in the last three finals, started behind on the scoreboard and had the challenge of trying to come back. And that’s when it started to squeeze. In the final minutes of the first half, a more recognizable Sevilla was seen, taking advantage of the long discount for the time lost due to Gudelj’s punch on Abraham. First Fernando warned with a forced header from a corner, although it was Rakitic who came closest to equalizing with a left-footed shot on the post long into added time that Englishman Taylor marked.

});

The Nervionenses were more determined in the second half. With Suso and Lamela on for Óliver and Bryan, Mendilibar looked for more passing options and to unlock the Roman padlock. And the truth is that it didn’t take long to find the key. He equalized a cross from Jesús Navas that Mancini reached in his goal when trying to block contact with En-Nesyri. The game time was not yet reached and Sevilla managed to bring the final back to the starting point.

});

This is when the game started to harden, getting closer and closer to the terrain where Mourinho was comfortable. Bono avoided Abraham’s jumbled shot for Roma’s second goal with a lateral free kick and VAR ruled out what would have been Sevilla’s final blow when Taylor whistled a penalty from Ibañez to Ocampos which was reviewed and ruled out. That action only started a heated rivalry heading into the final stages. In it, with great tension and extension close, there is more heart than head, and an attempt by Suso to meet Rui Patricio.

});

The tension rises, as expected in extra time, where you’re subconsciously thinking about penalties and chances that are almost gone. Roma wasted no time, with players on the ground, consistent in the second half, bravely looking for a penalty shootout, which the Italians tried to avoid in a harassing finale with fouls in which they hit the crossbar with a ball.

And in the shootout appeared the figure of Bono, as in Cologne in 2020, stopping two shots, and that of Montiel, a specialist in penalties worth a title. At first it failed, but Taylor ordered the launch to be repeated and there he was unforgiving. Sevilla is a seven-time champion.
