Marseille has proposed to Chilean Alexis Sánchez a renewal with an economic improvement to achieve his continuity since his contract expired on June 30.
“Alexis is an exemplary leader and had a great season from a statistical point of view. That made us decide to propose that he continue”, announced the Spanish Pablo Longoria, president of Marseille, in a press conference to review the season that just ended and the goals to prepare for the next one.
Alexis, 34 years old, he scored 18 goals and provided three assists in a total of 44 games this seasonwhere Marseille finished third in Ligue 1, so they will play the previous stage of the Champions League.
Longoria admitted that Saudi Arabia is evaluating many players to try to sign them with the appeal of “making a lot of money”, but he assured that the Chilean international “has found an environment here where he feels loved and respected”.
Longoria added that they had spoken with Alexis’ agent but did not want to detail numbers, “because it would be disrespectful” to the former FC Barcelona player.
Alexis, whose long career has taken him to River Plate, Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester United among other teams, arrived at the start of last season from Inter Milan.
A coach who “speaks French at the end of the season”
On the other hand, the president of the Marseillaise did not give any hints as to who could be the next coach of the team after the departure of the Croatian Igor Tudor, which came before the start of the season after the sudden departure of the Argentine Jorge Sampaoli because of his differences with the management of the club.
“For the coach, you don’t have to rush. You have to find the right profile,” Longoria limited himself in saying, but he added that, if he were a foreigner, “I wouldn’t accept” that he wouldn’t speak French in end of the season.
Kudos to Pau López
Longoria also pointed to his satisfaction with the season the starting goalkeeper, Espanyol, has had Paul Lopez in his second season with the team.
“I consider Pau’s season very positive, especially since most of his interventions were one-on-one. He improved, dominated the area and improved in corner kicks and technically,” Longoria explained about former goalkeeper from Espanyol and Tottenham.
