Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal launched an investigation Monday into the merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golfannounced on June 6, due to “serious questions” raised by the possible involvement of the Government of Saudi Arabia
Blumenthal, who is the chairman of the powerful Senate Investigations subcommittee, The PGA Tour and LIV Golf requested all of its documents, both communications and recordsrelated to the merger.
the democratic senator noted that the merger was “concerned” about the role of the Saudi Arabian authorities “in influencing this effort and the dangers of a foreign government entity having control over an important American institution.”
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) owns LIV Golf, an alternative league created on the heels of a checkbook and launched in 2022.
From their inception, and until the unexpected merger on June 6, LIV Golf and the PGA Tour have been at war with the Saudi league’s controversial approach to recruiting golfers.
In a letter sent to Australian Greg Norman, the CEO of LIV Golf, Blumenthal emphasized the “deeply troubling human rights record” of Saudi Arabia and the Saudi authorities’ intention to invest in sports to “advance the strategic objectives” of the Riyadh authorities.
Relatives of victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the US criticized the merger agreement.. The families have called for an in-depth investigation into possible links between the perpetrators of the attacks and the Saudi authorities for years.
