Society assumes the importance of progress towards sustainability in all areas, it is a path of no return. And in The first line of this change is the use of renewable fuels. A solution developed in sports competition that expanded its use to private consumption.
The use of traditional racing fuels has a number of days. In 2024, that is, next year, the fuels used by motorcycles must contain at least 40% renewable fuel, a percentage that it will reach 100% from 2027.
And in a place where the end is pure performance, Large energy companies are engaged in significant research work. Obviously, all those present at the World Championship have been experimenting and developing these new maximum performance fuels for years.
The world of renewable fuel is full of nuances, but in the case of its application in competition, the first question is its energy efficiency. That means, whether or not the performance of the machines will be affected, and if so, in what way and at what cost.
In this sense, the tests carried out in the race departments of the different brands present in the MotoGP World Championship, such as Repsol Honda, have been positive, as explained dolores cardenasspecialist in Fuel Development at the Repsol “Technology Lab”: “In addition to reducing the carbon footprint, these renewable fuels have very similar, almost identical, properties to the fuels we use today, so they are fully compatible with current machines”.
Repsol, which maintains its commitment to become a net zero emissions company by 2050, clearly focused on advanced biofuels, from waste of organic origin and synthetic fuels (e-fuels), produced from renewable hydrogen and captured CO2. Along these lines, the multi-energy company plans to start a new plant for the production of advanced biofuels in Cartagena this year.
Experiments and tests conducted prove that engines that use advanced biofuels can run like those that use fossil fuels. In fact, advanced biofuels can provide greater efficiency compared to conventional ones, as most biofuels have a higher octane rating and energy density than gasoline and diesel.
Differences between renewable fuel and traditional fuel
The main difference between renewable and traditional fuels is the source from which the energy is obtained. The first is made from renewable organic matter, something that does not happen in the case of traditional fuels.
All in all, renewable fuels are considered a more sustainable and environmentally responsible option than fossil fuelsbecause they reduce dependence on non-renewable resources and net zero emissions.
MotoGP is just one example of a trend that is steadily spreading throughout the motor world, where renewable fuels are preparing to make a move in mobility in general. It is not only the technology that determines the sustainable future of the competition, but, so far, they have shown that they have the necessary guarantees and benefits so that the show not only continues, but also does so by reducing net CO2 emissions .
