The most anticipated news of the past weeks has finally come to light. The World Cup in Australia and New Zealand will be shown in Spain live via RTVEas well as in 33 other European countries, as announced by FIFA. So, Spain, Germany, France, Italy or the United Kingdom, among others, they ended the controversy over the loss of television and the sale of TV rights by combining the sale of these rights.
RTVE will broadcast the 25 main matches of the tournament, one per day of the competition, including all matches played by the Spanish team, the opening match, the semifinals and the final.
The sale of TV rights was finally unblocked thanks to an agreement between FIFA and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU, which agreed to expand their cooperation to ensure that the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand , which will take place from July 20 to August 20, will be broadcast free of charge through EBU channels in a total of 34 European territories.
This cooperation agreement includes the EBU’s commitment to regularly broadcast women’s football content even after the tournament.
The memorandum of understanding follows talks at FIFA headquarters last month between the president of soccer’s world governing body, Gianni Infantino, the director of the FIFA Commercial Division, romy gai, and representatives of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), led by its director general, Noel Curran. The new partnership framework covers broadcasting rights on television, radio and digital channels, and incorporates the EBU’s greater commitment when it comes to promoting women’s football, which will help in the continued promotion of this discipline.
Last October, the two institutions announced a preliminary agreement confirming the free-to-air broadcast of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ in 28 European territories. The revised agreement includes the main European broadcasting market, in addition to Ukraine.
“FIFA is pleased to announce the extension of its agreement with the European Broadcasting Union for the broadcast of the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup™, which will include the five core markets of its current network, Germany, Spain, France, Italy and the United Kingdom, as in addition to Ukraine, guaranteeing the widest possible coverage for the tournament,” declared FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “With this agreement, the EBU commits to broadcast at least one hour of women’s football per week on the same digital platform as its media network. This will provide a golden opportunity to promote the discipline and gain visibility , is the top priority for us in line with FIFA’s commitment to the long-term development of women’s football.” .
EBU Director General Noel Curran said: “We are delighted to have strengthened our successful partnership with FIFA to secure broadcasting rights on behalf of Europe’s leading public service broadcasters. The FIFA Women’s World Cup™ is one of the most exciting and fastest growing sporting competitions on the planet, and we are committed to working with FIFA to help women’s football reach as many fans as possible across the continent. Women’s football is a key pillar of the new digital platform we will present next year”.
EBU members, including ARD/ZDF (Germany), RTVE (Spain), France Télévisions (France), RAI (Italy) and BBC/ITV (United Kingdom), will also help broadcast the tournament through its channel as part of the EBU’s long-term strategy to foster the development of women’s football in Europe and other regions. In Ukraine, the person in charge of broadcasting the tournament is the UAPBC, a member of the EBU.
The new agreement extends the success of the previous agreement between FIFA and the EBU for the broadcast of the 2019 World Cup in France, which enabled EBU members to reach record audience numbers with coverage that marked the before and after women’s sports.
The first to be held in the southern hemisphere and the Asia-Pacific region, the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ will feature 32 teams, eight more than the 2019 edition, and feature 64 matches. The opening duel will take place on Thursday, July 20, and the grand final will be held on August 20 at Australia Stadium (Sydney/Gadigal).
