Significantly less – climate bonus: you can count on that much money

Date:

After the climate surcharge has been increased sharply in 2022 due to inflation, this year there will be a return to the originally planned system with regional division. A distinction is made between four categories.

Depending on where you live, you will receive 110, 150, 185 or 220 euros from the beginning of September, the National Council decided on Wednesday with the votes of the ÖVP and the Greens.

Compared to 500 euros for adults and 250 euros for children last year, the climate allowance is significantly lower this year. How high it actually is depends on where you live. The better the public transport and infrastructure, the lower the benefit.

Automatic payout
The community categories were created by Statistics Austria – Vienna’s districts were now also considered separately and those outside the belt were better off with 40 euros more. How high the respective regional compensation is can be followed after entering the respective postal code at klimabonus.gv.at. The payout is automatic.

The SPÖ criticized the setting of the amount based on postal code rather than social criteria. The FPÖ voted against because they reject the CO2 tax and redistribution through the climate bonus in principle, as stated in the debate. The NEOS also collided with it. Also new in 2023 is that detainees will no longer receive a climate bonus; but the liberals also wanted to exclude asylum seekers.

The ÖVP stressed that people who are not legally resident will be excluded from the referral. The Greens stressed that most people received more climate bonuses than they paid in the carbon tax.

More money for “Light in the Dark”
A special grant of 14.4 million euros for “Licht ins Dunkel” was also adopted with coalition votes. To mark the campaign’s 50th anniversary, the government pledged in the autumn to match donations to “Licht ins Dunkel” received between November 18 and December 24, 2022. The funds may only be used to support projects for people with disabilities and social disadvantages.

The decision to reallocate resources for the renovation of the parliament was unanimous because the consequences of Corona and inflation could cost more than budgeted. The planned maximum costs of 422.6 million may in principle be exceeded by a maximum of three percent. Covid had already been claimed as an exception.

Cost overruns are now also possible due to other global crisis developments. The money for this can be taken from the parliamentary budget, with resources that should mainly be used
