Robert Gesink has extended his contract with Jumbo-Visma until the end of 2024moment in which he will end his long career as a professional cyclist.
The 37-year-old Dutchman has stage victories at the Vuelta a España, Switzerland or Belgium to his extensive recordas well as victories in the Tour of Oman, the Giro d’Emilia, Lombard Week or in classics such as the Quebec or Montreal Grand Prix, among others.
“I’m looking forward to continuing with this team for another year. The motivation is still high and I’m enjoying it here. In December, I agreed with the team that we will discuss a possible retirement from cycling after Giro I appreciate that the team management leaves the decision in my hands“, explained the Dutch climber.
He admitted that his career “has been a roller coaster” where he has “seen the good and the bad of cycling” and made sure he wants to share his experiences with the team’s youngsters.
Merijn Zeeman, sports director of Jumbo-Visma, emphasized that Gesink is “an icon” for the squad: “It has been a mainstay for years. Extending his contract was a logical decision for us and, fortunately, he shares this opinion.”
