Sainz: “You can come back and return to a Top-5”

Date:

Carlos Sainz did not have a lucky day at the Canadian F1 GP. He got off to a great start on Friday, but in Free Practice 3 he crashed into the wall after setting the second fastest time. That’s when his day started to go wrong. In qualifying, Carlos can aim for the first or second row with his Ferrari. But in Q3, the lottery of rain did not benefit him. According to Carlos, in his first attempt he lifted his foot in the final corners to prepare for his next lap, a turn he would not give due to a red flag that came accompanied by heavy rain. Sainz was 8th, but ended up receiving a 3-place penalty on the grid for blocking Gasly in Q1, A clear mistake on his wall, which he did not warn about and relegated him to 11th position.

“It was very difficult. Also from the blow of Free Practice 3, having to run and push in these conditions like before, with dry tires in Q2, it had to take risks and it was good in Q2, and in Q3 it became a bit of a lottery. In Q3 I went up a bit in the last chicane to prepare for the next lap, and in the next lap there was a red flag and the rain came. So we didn’t get the full potential in Q3, which is probably a Top-3 now. But I’m happy with the recovery in Free Practice and having a solid Q1 and Q2”, commented the man from Madrid on ‘DAZN F1’.

“Traffic? There was everything, but for everyone. Not one was saved. In the first ‘run’ of Q3 I did not see well in the last sector, in a lot of spray, everything was a bit complicated, but even, in situation, I think tomorrow we can come back and get back to a Top-5”said Sainz, hoping to gain race positions on Sunday on the long straight at the Circuit de Gilles-Villeneuve.
