Carlos Sainz has been punished with a three-place grid ban at the 2023 F1 Canadian GP for impeding Pierre Gasly in Q1. The Spaniard finished 8th in Q3 on a difficult day in his red office and was relegated to 11th starting place for this Sunday after that penalty.
The French pilot came in his last attempt with a fast lap, at full speed on the straight before entering the finish line. There, Carlos Sainz rolled slowly before starting his final turn, at the Canadian track’s final chicane. But there, his wall failed. They didn’t warn him that he had to stay away then because Pierre Gasly was coming full blast, full speed. Again, Ferrari made the same mistake as Leclerc in Monaco, when they did not warn the Monegasque that an opponent was coming in a thrown spin in the tunnel area. That adds to the complaints launched by Leclerc this Saturday in Canada, making it clear that the team got their tire strategy wrong, something that Charles was ruled out of in Q2.

Gasly was very angry
Pierre Gasly had to change his line and skip the final chicane to avoid impact with the Spaniard’s car and it exploded on the radio. “I’m going 300 km/h! What the f… are they thinking?”, took out Alpine’s radio, furious. Gasly is setting his best lap, so it’s clear that Carlos Sainz will not take this penalty away.
