Finally there will be VAR in the European Sub’21

Date:

The controversial France-Italy game on Thursday, which coincides with the U21 European Championship, once again put on the table why this European team tournament does not have this technology. An instrument that, however, was used in the 2019 edition in Italy and was not used again in this new edition that brings together the best European teams in the category, nor was it used in the 2021 edition.

An absence based, according to sources consulted by MD, for economic reasons because logistically this technology can be used without problems in any stadium in the world. More so when the Romanian league starts using VAR in its league for this 2023-2024 season.

The use of VAR only requires the implementation of the minimum necessary cameras in stadiums in addition to the mobile unit located outside the stadium where the VAR and AVAR referee perform their functions. Something that is already happening in competitions such as the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. The job requires VAR operators to also operate the mobile unit in addition to the device in all stadiums where it is used. In the Italy 2019 edition, UEFA assumed all these costs of his work. In addition, this function can be carried out and developed by Hawk Eye, which is currently the company with tender in all club and national team competitions organized by the highest European body.

Well, UEFA announced this Friday that, due to the situation that arose yesterday, it will finally implement both VAR and goal technology from the quarterfinals of the U21 tournament. Now he has to put all the logistics in place so that all the necessary people at this stage are ready for this round of the tournament.

VAR will be in place throughout the 2023-24 Champions League

This decision on VAR as it is known today is more than UEFA’s commitment to this technology. In fact, it has informed all associations and clubs that from the next 2023-2024 season it will extend the use of this technology to the three main club competitions.

In the case of the Champions League, it will start to be used in the preliminary round before the group stage. It is the only one that has so far not used VAR. But it will also extend to the other two competitions.

In anticipation of the 2023-2024 season, the Europa League will start having it from the third qualifying round, while in the Conference from the play-offs. Going into the 2024-2025 season, the Europa League will have it from the first qualifying round, while the Conference studies its implementation in previous rounds. This is at the expense of further feasibility studies due to the high number of parties

Two additional members per party

In addition, the refereeing team will also include two additional members in matches where VAR is used, the fee paid by UEFA for hosting costs will increase by 2,000 euros per match. In the UEFA Champions League rounds before the qualifiers, the home club will be responsible for the television production and must contact a broadcast or technical partner to produce a broadcast of the match, even if the match itself is not on television. In principle, the same is required from Europe and the Conference League for rounds where VAR is applied. Tomorrow is the referee of the Netherlands, Allard Lindhout, who will whistle tomorrow for Spain’s second match in the U21 European Championship against Croatia.
