Even in the presence of VAR and with the advent of semi-automatic offside, there are still many doubts about this violation in the development of current football. Especially in those situations where the violation occurs at a very small margin, almost imperceptible to the human eye, but it is detected by technology. And that, in many cases, has an effect on the spectacle of football.
That is why for some time now there is one currently promoting a new concept of offside where there is a greater margin when it comes to pointing this position. For this reason, FIFA and the IFAB (International Board) are already working on a new offside concept, which allows for more dynamic and entertaining football.
For this reason, both organizations are planning to start testing a new strategy to punish anti-regulatory positions. Tactic that can be considered “offside” when the entire body of the footballer is forward. In other words, when a part of the attacking footballer’s body is in line with the last player of the opposing defense, it cannot be considered offside.
The new concept has been slipped into the last meetings held by the International Board. It will initially be tested in the lower categories in countries such as Italy, Sweden and the Netherlands, before jumping into professional football in the future.
It’s a strategy long advocated by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who is now FIFA’s director of World Football Development. In fact, its influence has been capitalized on other recent changes implemented in football, such as the elimination of goals in the opposite field.
