James Trafford, goalkeeper dand the England under-21 team, quit a penalty to Abel Ruiz in the 99th minute that meant a tie and extra time in the final of the European category against Spain and revealed that it was something he put his team-mates first before the match.
“I am very happy for the team, my family and my friends. I told my teammates this morning that I will save a penalty and it happened. We are a good team and we really believed that nobody could score a goal for us” , he commented on Channel 4, a British free-to-air public television broadcasting channel.
For his part, Anthony Gordon, named best player of the European sub-21 after scoring two goals and providing an assist, he reckons the said trophy could have gone to the goalkeeper.
“Trafford could be player of the tournament. Amazing. I have never seen a goalkeeper with a performance like his in the tournament,” he said in a press conference.
Moreover, he acknowledged that they were lucky to win the title.
“It was a very intense game, but we already knew that. Spain has a special style of football that is very difficult to play. I think we made an effort and we were united at times. Sometimes you just need a little bit of luck and we have had it,” he said in a press conference.
