Mike Dean has certainly set himself apart in the world of arbitration. At the age of 55, the legendary English football referee blew the whistle at the end of the 2021-2022 season and this summer he left his role with the Premier League’s VAR and the refereeing college (PGMOL).
Dean started whistling in 1985 and progressed until he in 2000 he reached the Premier, where he officiated over 550 top-flight matches, before becoming a full-time video assistant referee (VAR) in 2022.
Dean gained attention for his charismatic refereeing style, dealing cards with flair and letting the ball run between his legs during matches.
Dean officiated the FA Cup finals in 2008 (Cardiff-Portsmouth, 0-1) and the League Cup in 2011 (Arsenal-Birmingham, 1-2), both at Wembley. He also became a FIFA referee.
“PGMOL would like to place on record its appreciation of Mike’s achievements, as well as his immense contribution to the tenure and to the game in general,” PGMOL said in a statement. “We thank him for his long-term dedication to the organization and wish him every success in the future.”
