American star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Olympic champion and world record holder in the 400m hurdles, has announced that she will withdraw from the World Championships in Budapest, from August 19 to 27, due to a knee injury.
“After talking to my doctors and my coaches, I need to take care of a little knee problem so that I can be fully available for the 2024 Olympic Games next year,” the 24-year-old said in his Instagram account.
Sydney McLaughlin missed the 400m Diamond League meeting in Monaco on July 21, again with “knee discomfort”.
Initially registered in the 400 m of Monaco, a discipline in which he decided to bet in 2023 with the aim of breaking the record of the German (ex-GDR) Marita Koch (47″60 in 1985), McLaughlin seeks a fourth world title after 400 hurdles (2022) and 4×400 m relay (2019 and 2022).
The sprinter won the 400m at the USA trials in Eugene, Oregon in early July running a season-best 48.74.
Last year at Worlds he took the 400m hurdles world record in 50’68.
