Double romp at the US Open: semifinalists victims in the first round

Date:

the danish Holger Rune (nº 4) and the Greek Maria Sakkari (8) the victims of the world’s highest rankings on the opening day of the US Open 2023. In the middle of the second day of competition, surprises continued to happen in New York.

The event was left without two of its semifinalists in the last edition, the French Caroline GarciaNo. 7 in the ranking, and the Russian Karen Khachanov, No. 11.

They are two victories that are both painful, because they are early for their quality and because it means the loss of a good number of points in the respective WTA and ATP rankings, although with a different interpretation.

It was logical for Khachanov to bow to the American michael mmoh, 89th ATP. The strength of the result (6-2, 6-4, 6-2) shows that the Spanish student Pepo Clavet not yet in form. He has returned to the tour since suffering a sacral stress fracture during the quarterfinal match Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros.

More worrying is Garcia’s negative streak, which has been underlined at this US Open. They have lost five of their last seven meetings, going against the Chinese Yafan Wang114th and coming from the previous stage, by 6-4, 6-1 in 1h.10′.

There was no sign of the tennis player who championed the WTA Finals last year. Note quite the dynamics taken Garbine Muguruza after becoming the ‘teacher’ of the women’s circuit.
