Both Lewis Hamilton and the head of Mercedes, Toto Wolff, have warned him for a long time. It’s only a matter of time before the British rider, 7-time world champion, renews with the team he considers his second family. Both are clear about this, but it is strange that the signature did not come. Weeks, months, and more went by. There was speculation about the possibility that everything would stop, although there was no drama, because of negotiations about a theoretical post of Lewis with Mercedes as ambassador after he finished driving in F1. It is also said that Hamilton is asking for two years and that Mercedes is not up for the job. And in between, rumors spread that Lewis was wanted by Ferrari. But that bomb went off the rails. Its legs are very short. The Englishman bit it from the start by making sure he wanted to stay at Mercedes. And now, surely, in the home of those from Maranello, Mercedes announced the continuation of not only Hamilton in his team, but also George Russell, both until 2025.
Mercedes announced this Thursday, before the F1 Italian GP, the renewal of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell until 2025, for two more seasons. Both drivers terminated their contracts at the end of this course and so the Brackley team can continue to count on its current line-up of drivers, one of the most competitive and consistent in Formula 1.
Lewis Hamilton, at his current age of 38, will reach at least 40 years of age driving for Mercedes in F1. All this, after showing that at 38 years old he is at a very high level this season, with a Mercedes that is already better than the one from last year. For its part, Mercedes ensures the continuation of its young star, George Russell, champion of the meat and that at 25 years old he can be a very talented driver and very desirable for any great project.
Hamilton: “I won’t stop until I achieve it”
“We dream every day to be the best and have spent the last decade together to achieve that goal. Being at the top does not happen overnight or in a short time, it requires commitment, hard work and dedication, and it has been an honor to earn a place in the history books with this incredible team”, commented Hamilton in the official statement from Mercedes about his renewal, making it clear that he continues to succeed once again in search of his eighth title.
“We have never been more hungry to win. We have learned from each success but also from each setback. We continue to pursue our dreams, we continue to fight no matter the challenge and we will win again. I thank the team that supported me , both inside and outside the track. Our story is not over yet, we are determined to achieve more together and we will not stop until we achieve it,” he concluded.
Russell:
“I have grown with this team since I joined as part of the Junior program in 2017. It is my home and it is great to extend our special relationship until 2025,” commented George Russell on his renewal at Mercedes.
“After taking the race seat at Mercedes last year, I want to repay the trust and belief that Toto (Wolff, his boss) and the rest of the team put in me. Got my first pole position and won a race last year “It was an unforgettable feeling. But most importantly, it’s been great to work with everyone at Brackley and Brixworth to promote our car and drive our development forward. Their honesty, vision and hard work is inspiring,” added the 25-year-old Brit.
“We’ve made some big strides over the last 18 months and we’re only getting stronger as a team. I’m excited to help continue to build on that momentum as we move into 2024 and 2025 while continuing to focus on moving back forward,” he concluded. said George.
