The Costa Brava-Barcelona candidacy receives a visit from Ryder Cup technicians

Date:

A Ryder Cup technical delegation visited on August 31 Camiral Golf & Wellness in Caldes de Malavella (Girona) to check if the candidacy Costa Brava-Barcelona the 2031 edition could be organized in these facilities, despite the refusal of the Generalitat to build the third field required by the organization.

On August 1, after months of negotiations, the Camiral Golf&Wellness, formerly PGA Catalunya, received a government refusal to build a third golf course due to the climatic and environmental context marked by drought.

However, as he explained to EFE David Plana, CEO of Camiral Golf&Wellnesswork continues on the Costa Brava-Barcelona candidacy as it meets the “remaining conditions” and demands.

In fact, Plana points out that the Council of Ministers has already approved and signed the package of necessary economic and financial measures, as well as other requirements, in terms of customs or immigration permits, for example, or the consideration of a special event.

Plana regrets that in the third course the Ryder Cup would have awarded the 2031 edition to the candidacy, but the work was done to change the project and now the proposal is to assume the competition in the two courses currently available in the Ryder Cup. Camiral Golf & Wellness with modifications, if necessary.

The visit of Ryder Cup technicians took place on Thursday, August 31, and from Camiral Golf&Wellness they hope to receive a response in the month of October, because in these weeks the preparation for the edition of the tournament that will be held on the 29th is ending. from September to October 1 at Rome.

The bid, with the support of the Catalan and Spanish golf federations, Girona and Barcelona council and Barcelona City Counciladmits that the Ryder Cup is examining alternatives, but emphasizes that at the same time it is working on the proposal of Camiral Golf&Wellness and appreciates it “because a lot of work has been done”.

Plana is optimistic and insists on the importance of hosting such an event in Catalonia, because “in many reviews, the Ryder Cup is the third sporting event in the world after the World Cup and the Olympic Games, with a difference compared to the others events which also turn. the territory has been a world tourist destination for many years”.

“It has a very clear sporting dimension, but it goes beyond this sporting dimension because a global tourist destination has been created: the sites that host the Ryder Cup continue to welcome people to play in their fields after 25 years. It is an investment in the future. It is very important, something that creates a brand of the country,” argues Plana.

In this sense, he added that a part of the 40 million euros that the Government will contribute is earmarked to organize world-class golf tournaments in Catalonia for ten years, the five before the Ryder Cup and the five after.

According to the candidacy’s calculations, the contest will attract more than 270,000 visitors and have an economic return of more than 1,300 million euros, in addition to generating more than a thousand jobs during the year of preparation, organization of the competition (350 of a permanent) and gather 2,000 accredited journalists.

“These data are prepared from the information of the edition of Paris (2018), the last one made in Europe. In Paris there are 270,000, but here it is believed that there may be more, about 100,000 per day, and tourists. Can it will still be more important. At the level of Barcelona perhaps there are many more active, but in Girona there are no more possibilities to organize an international event like this”, said Plana.

The project has had the support of the economic sector of the province of Girona from the beginning, especially in the fields of hotels and restaurants.

In April, the Federation of employers of Girona Business Organizations (FOEG) and Pimec, the Chamber of Commerceassociations of campsites, apartments and travel agencies and the Hospitality Federation and the Girona Tourist Board signed a statement in which they highlighted that the Ryder Cup was “a great opportunity”.
