Dominica ConcSlovenian international from Levante Las Planas and one of the captains of the national team, explained the atrocities suffered by the internationals of Slovenia by, above all, their own coaches. The 30-year-old soccer player played for RCD Espanyol five seasons ago.
In July, he and 30 of his teammates wrote an open letter to the president of the Slovenian Football Federation (NZS) demanding that the coach be fired. Borut Jarc and detailing allegations of bullying, sexism and inappropriate behavior within the team during rallies.
“The atmosphere is very unprofessional, everything is very inappropriate. Insults to us, sexist comments and homophobic treatment about our personal life that has nothing to do with football. Things have been happening for the last five years. Before we had a relationship out of respect and out of fear we didn’t say anything. Many players had to seek outside help, from psychologists and other professionals,” he told BBC Sport.
The list of accusations contained in the Slovenian players’ letter is extensive. These include accusations of inappropriate comments by Jarc, explained that coaches traffic alcohol during training camps and openly drink during meals and after training sessions, and the players’ personal lives and sexual orientation became an issue.
It is also said that the players were forced to play a qualifying match for Euro 2022 while sick with Covid-19, that they suffered “degrading treatment” in terms of body weight and had to fight unspeakably to be used the same equipment than the internationals and to show their name on their back.
“There was no interest in the women’s team. They didn’t want to listen to us and said it wasn’t for us. At that time we saw that no one was listening to us. So we had to do something different and decided to write things and send again them to the federation and try to talk about those things with them again privately, and what they did was they didn’t respond to us.”
Jarc finally resigned and issued a lengthy statement denying the accusations. But Conc believes Jarc’s departure won’t solve anything. “He is not the only one who abused us. We have a feeling that the federation has us because it has us. We have to fight for the shirts, for the names of the shirts… We are playing in the middle of the day, in the middle of nowhere “No wonder no one comes to watch our games,” he lamented.
