After days of manhunt, British police have arrested a terror suspect who escaped from a London prison. Officials were able to arrest the 21-year-old shortly before 11 a.m. (local time) on Saturday in the London borough of Chiswick, the Metropolitan Police said.
Police had previously focused their search on the affluent neighborhood in the south-west of the capital after reports of sightings of the ex-soldier there.
Terrorist suspect clings to the underside of the truck
The arrest marks the end of a three-day large-scale manhunt, which also saw significant tightening of security checks at ports and airports. The man escaped from Wandsworth Prison in south-west London on Wednesday morning by clinging to the underside of a truck.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was pleased with the success of the manhunt. The conservative politician told journalists on the sidelines of the G20 summit in India that he wanted to thank the police and the public who helped catch the man with a “huge number of leads”.
It was surprising how the former soldier, accused of planting fake bombs at a military base, managed to escape unnoticed. The government has announced in-depth investigations.
The situation in the British prison system is tense
The case highlights the tense situation in the British penal system. Many prisons are hopelessly overcrowded. In addition, there are staff shortages, high rates of illness and major fluctuations.
A large number of buildings, some of which date back to the 19th century, are also considered obsolete. The writer Oscar Wilde, who was persecuted for his homosexuality, was imprisoned in Wandsworth Prison. Recently, the German former tennis star Boris Becker also spent some time in prison.
