The 2031 Ryder Cup could be held in Catalonia. As published this Thursday by ‘La Vanguardia’, the Costa Brava-Barcelona candidacy is a step away from tying up the organization of the competition facing, every two years, teams from Europe and the United States.
The tournament it will be played at the PGA Catalunya, located in the Caldes de Malavella (Girona)which was already at the gate of the venue in 2022, an edition that was finally postponed to 2023 and held in Rome.
The information collected by the Barcelona newspaper indicates that the owner of the farm, Denis O’Brien, has already achieved the support of the Spanish and Catalan federations, the Spanish Government and the Girona Provincial Council and City Council.
In addition, the central government has given political endorsement to the event (eventually it should be defined at 96 million) while the Girona Provincial Council will contribute four million.
What is lacking is the support of the Generalitat, the Barcelona City Council and the Barcelona Provincial Councilwho will have to contribute approximately $ 45 million to pay within ten years to complete the closure an agreement that would create 150 jobs after the opening of a new golf course that will be added to the current 480 of PGA Catalunya.
And it’s the direct impact of competition is close to 570 million, of which another 590 will have to be added from the revenue generated by golf tourism in the area in the coming years.
This will be the third top-level sporting event that Catalonia will host in the coming years, after the America Sailing Cup in 2024 and, if eventually there is an agreement with Aragon, the Winter Games in 2030.
Pending the final decision for 2031, the Ryder Cup has already tied the venue for the next four editions, to be held in Rome (2023), New York (2025), Limerick (Ireland, 2027) and Minnesota (2029).
