Metcalf surprised local hero Lejarraga with points

Date:

This Friday, the spectacular Bilbao Arena was the scene of a very special night of boxing with the main match of the night in the vacant Continental WBA (World Boxing Association) super welterweight title at stake between Basque boxer Kerman Lejarraga and the English boxer James ‘JJ’ Metcalf. And it didn’t fail the rivalry between the two fighters who were intimate, very strong and in shape that led to Metcalf’s points on the following referees points: 97-94, 96-94 and 96-95.

Kerman Lejarraga, number 4 in the world, came into this match with a record 34 wins, 26 of them by KO and with just two losses and James Metcalf, number 13 Commonwealth champion and holding a WBC intermediate title, with a record of 22, 14 KOs and 2 losses. An absolute trap match for Basque against a rival who is not world-class, but has known him since they were welterweights.

});

Kerman had already taken the middle of the ring from the first round and pulled out his powerful left jab, more effectively the Basque, reaching his very defensive rival. In the second the Liverpool player’s hooks began to appear and in the third the Englishman’s first (irregular) right hand reached the occipital part of Kerman’s head, who briefly knelt on the ground.

In the fourth, Lezarraga’s crochet and straight shots began to reach the Englishman’s body, neutralizing rival attacks with his closed guard. In the fifth the English began to retreat, striking the Biscayan with very strong hands, some already leaving marks on Metcalf’s face (right cheekbone).

In the sixth perfectly left Metcalf’s face in a job of massive damage that has already opened up cuts in Liverpool’s face. The left jab and bow with the right gave Biscayan the seventh round.

In the eighth round, a stiff hook from Kerman ended the fight better, even though all blows carry danger and the ‘bomb’ could explode at any time. On the ninth new right to the jaw the Englishman received another warning from the referee.

And in the last and crucial three minutes of the tenth round, actions of destruction and attack, a very difficult battle between two fighters who maintain mutual respect in the Bilbao Arena public trying to give their wings compatriots and that has been brought the smallest is Liverpool.

For the rest of the night, the clash for the vacant EBU flyweight title, undefeated Jairo Noriega (12-0, 3 KOs) prevailed by unanimous decision in round twelve against Ángel Moreno (21-5- 3, 6 KOs), 38 years old. Noriega dropped Moreno in the first round and dropped again in the fifth, but was forced to walk away. The results are unanimous: 116-110, 118-109, 118-109.

Jon Míguez maintained his undefeated record against James Moorcroft at welterweight, as well as Roque Fran Mendoza against Alexander Mejia.
